God knew that people would battle two major enemies: pride and selfishness.
He dealt with humanity's pride at Babel (Genesis 11:1 – 9).
In Genesis 14 we see how he dealt with humanity selfishness through the tithe. Abraham was the first recorded man to tithe (even though Abel brought of the firstlings of the flock).
Abraham's worship of God with 10% of his revenue showed that he had placed his financial responsibility upon God's shoulders.
He gave his tithe to Melchizedek, a type of Christ.
He refused to partake of the world system when he refused the king of Sodom's reward (14:22).
In Genesis 15:1, God became his"reward" (his salary, wages and compensation).
God rewarded Abraham was something that money could not by: a child!
Tithing was a sign of Abraham's covenant with God.
In return, God placed all of his assets to Abraham even unto the fourth generation (Genesis 15:14– 16).
Abraham further exemplified an unselfish spirit when he gave a lot the first choice of where to live.
The final result was that Abraham profited much more than lot because he obeyed the principle of unselfish sacrifice for others.
